How to open a company in Norway

Norway’s standard private vehicle is the aksjeselskap (AS), a limited company.

Capital

An AS requires a minimum share capital of NOK 30,000, which can in part cover formation costs. Liability is limited to the company.

Register with Brønnøysund

The company is registered with the Brønnøysund Register Centre (Brønnøysundregistrene) — the Register of Business Enterprises — usually through the Altinn portal. It needs a board and a Norwegian business address.

Identity and tax

Much of the process runs through Norwegian digital identity and a D-number for non-residents, and the company registers with the tax authorities and for VAT above the threshold.

For foreign founders

Foreigners can own a Norwegian AS, but the D-number, Altinn access and bank account are the usual friction. A verified Norwegian colleague can register the company and handle the formalities.

Identity and capital rules change — confirm with admitted Norwegian counsel.
