Italy, a country built on brands, offers a national filing route with a practical local twist for where you can apply.
File with the UIBM
National applications go to the Italian Patent and Trademark Office (UIBM), and — distinctively — they can be filed through local Chambers of Commerce as well as directly. An EU trade mark (EUTM) via the EUIPO covers all member states, and the Madrid Protocol reaches beyond.
Examination and opposition
The UIBM examines absolute grounds and publishes the mark; earlier-rights holders can file an opposition within the set period.
Classes and term
Applications use the Nice Classification, and registration lasts ten years, renewable indefinitely.
For foreign brand owners
Italy’s strong reputation in design and fashion makes early clearance and registration especially valuable. A verified Italian colleague can search, file with the UIBM, and handle any opposition.
